Mati was a prolific portrait painter with many famous names amongst his commissions, including John F. Kennedy, Noel Coward, Jimi Hendrix and many more. He brought his own unique style to the task, often vividly capturing the essence of the subject.
His portraits encompass a wide variety of styles; sometimes the unadorned image of the sitter, as in this striking portrait of Robert Graves, and sometimes almost drowning his subjects in the symbolism surrounding them. His family portraits, in particular, are often overflowing with imagery, with visual references for each of the family members.
